Nervous about Therapy? Some Thoughts For Therapy First-Timers

Therapy does involve going to “edgy” places – visiting with memories, thoughts, and emotions that can feel uncomfortable. You are breaking out of the same-ol’ same-ol’, since you have begun to notice that “same-ol’” is not working so well anymore. So by necessity you’ll be venturing into new or unfamiliar territory – thinking about things in a new way, letting out feelings that won’t seem to stay stuffed away anymore, having new realizations, and perhaps trying new behaviors.

For some of us who are starting therapy, the thought of this kind of Unknown Territory can feel scary. What will we find? Will it be painful? Will we change?

I view one of my roles as your therapist to join with you on this venture into the unknown. YOU are the expert on YOU, and I have done this kind of exploration with myself and many others, so together we make a great team as we explore YOU.

I join with you as a “co-pilot”. I’m your calm ally, your witness, perhaps your anchor sometimes, and your collaborator. I am with you on the path, asking questions to spark ideas, pointing out possible trails to explore, being your calm base camp, and helping ground you when you’d like to rest.

So you are not alone in venturing into the unknown. My hope is that my presence with you makes it a little less scary. Here we go!
