I want to offer you a closer look at my way of working as a therapist, my strengths and areas of focus, so you can better assess if I might be just what you’re looking for.
I support young, mid-life, and older professionals (both individuals and couples) struggling with anxiousness, irritability, self-doubt, and stuckeness, who notice that the path they’re on has become unfulfilling or unsustainable and who are yearning for relief and a richer life experience.
I help clients deal with issues around their families of origin (maybe not-so-great, kind of sucky parents), anger issues, feeling hopeless or helpless, dealing with self-doubt, people pleasing, relationship issues, work challenges, sadness, and not knowing what to do (feeling stuck).
For mid-lifers, I’m your Mid-life Midwife. I help you make sense of what the heck just happened (over the past X decades), what’s happening now, and where you’d like to go from here. Maybe you sense there’s a different “you” trapped inside the role you currently play. I help you find them and free them.
Here’s how. Starting with the therapy room itself. I want the therapy room to be a place you can feel “different” than in your outside life. Maybe in your regular life you feel tense, stressed, angry, anxious, or sad a lot. I offer a calm, non-anxious place of acceptance and interest in you (and it’s genuine, fr fr. I am interested in you!). I want you to feel that you can really rest, let down, let it out – at your own pace. I want you to know that you’re going to be accepted, and that you can share or not share whatever you like. So I have an office in a garden bungalow that’s quiet and peaceful, with ample free parking. I want you to feel some ease right off the bat.
Then, I’m listening very very carefully to what you share – both verbal and non verbal. I reflect back to you what I’m seeing and hearing, things that you may not have been aware of. In this way I offer you insight and the opportunity to explore your challenges more deeply, to discover underlying truths you may not have known how to put into words. I use my intuitive sense to identify deeper themes or patterns that may be operating behind the scenes in your life. In this way I help you know yourself more fully and deeply.
As you share, I invite you to focus in three main areas: emotions, bodily sensations, and what’s happening in the present moment (and this is of course all at your own pace and desire to do so or not!). In my experience, making room and allowing ourselves to feel our feelings brings relief, self-confidence, and room for new perspectives and possibilities. Noticing our body sensations helps us understand our true feelings and needs (for example, we think we want to go to the family reunion, but we notice we feel nauseous every time we think about it! That’s a signal there may be something to explore about that.). And noticing what’s happening in the present moment gives us live, play-by-play experiences of our true self – not who we think we’re supposed to be. We get to practice actually being our true selves. We practice in the safety of the therapy room, then we can start to take it into our outside lives – leading to truer self expression and more fulfillment.
I do all of the above for both individuals and couples. For couples, I’m specifically aiming to help you have calmer, clear communication. I want to help you get through any built-up layers of resentment so you can return to feeling connected and loving with each other. I want to help you learn how to resolve conflict calmly and collaboratively, and to be able to navigate when emotions are high. I’m listening to each of you and helping each of you be heard and hear each other.
Finally, in addition to talk therapy, I offer other channels to support you.
- Walk-and-talk: some clients enjoy moving and being outdoors. It can help make talking about hard things feel easier.
- Art therapy – we can draw or make collages or bead stuff while we talk. This kind of creativity can be a doorway to self-discovery, a way to ease into talking, or a great way to start to express yourself.
- Expressive Play – this one’s my deep jam. For clients who are interested, I offer guidance and prompts to help you address your issues through play, movement, or vocalizing. Every prompt is individual in the moment, tailored to what may be helpful to you right now. For some clients this kind of exploration feels new and weird, but it can be a great way of discovering and uncovering very meaningful aspects of yourself.
I’m here to help you go deep and get to the root of your problems. We go at your pace. I looking forward to meeting you.
